Osteoarthritis is one of the main diseases of the modern aging population. Available methods for treatment of this disease are constantly expanding and include numerous non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, chondroprotectors, endoprosthesis, but their effectiveness often leaves much to be desired. New methods of treating degenerative joint diseases are aimed at regeneration of damaged cartilage with the help of progenitor cells. Mesenchymal stem cells are especially promising for this.
Mesenchymal stem cells can be isolated from the umbilical cord, placenta, adipose tissue, and bone marrow. Mesenchymal stem cells can transform into cartilage cells – chondrocytes; bone cells – osteocytes; collagen-producing cells – fibroblasts; tendons and fatty tissue. Mesenchymal stem cells also have an anti-inflammatory effect.
An analysis of scientific publications on umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis in 570 patients demonstrated their safety and efficacy, as well as the quality of regenerated cartilage (Lee DH et al, 2022).
In Ukraine, the Institute of Cell Therapy has developed a method of treating osteoarthritis using bone marrow and placenta stem cells. Since 2020, the Institute of Cell Therapy, jointly with the Institute of Orthopedics and Traumatology of NAMNU and Kyiv City Clinical Hospital No. 6, are implementing a clinical trial “Evaluation of the effectiveness of the use of bone marrow and placenta stem cells in the treatment of patients with osteoarthritis.”
As we reported earlier, world famous football player Andriy Shevchenko was one of the first patients who experienced the effectiveness of cell therapy for joint disease. All biological preparations for the treatment of patients within the clinical trial are manufactured by the Cryobank of the Institute of Cell Therapy.
