The role of junior medical staff in the effective treatment and rehabilitation of
patients is difficult to overestimate. That is why the World Health Organization has
announced 2020 the year of midwives and nurses.
Everyone knows the importance of midwifery skills and responsiveness for the
successful delivery of childbirth, but since midwives often also perform cord blood
collection after birth, it is in most cases that the volume and sterility of the collected
stem cells depend on them.
The Cryobank of the Institute of Cell Therapy constantly instructs obstetric
teams to ensure the quality of perinatal tissue collection (umbilical cord blood,
umbilical cord, placenta). Also, Cryobank pays considerable attention to the
organization of proper transportation of the collected biological material so that the
latter is as soon as possible delivered from the maternity ward of any region of
Ukraine to the laboratory in Kiev with the observance of the appropriate temperature
regime. Further, the Ukraine’s only ISO-accredited Cryobank in Ukraine carries out
the processing and cryoconservation of perinatal tissues (cord blood, umbilical cord,
placenta). The viability of stem cells cryopreserved by Cryobank reaches 96% after
thawing.
The Institute of Cell Therapy supports the World Health Organization's
initiative to mark 2020 as the year of the nurse and midwife and thanks the staff of
maternity hospitals for many years of cooperation.
