Keratitis is an inflammation of the cornea of the eye, which, in the absence of proper
treatment, can lead to blemishes, loss of vision and deterioration of the patient's
appearance. Quite often, keratites are characterized by a recurring course, which
negatively affects the quality of life of the patient due to reddening of the eyes, pain,
Scientists of the Institute of Cell Therapy, in collaboration with scientists of the
Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy of NAMSU developed a method
of surgical treatment of keratitis using an amniotic membrane of the placenta. The
ISO-accredited Cryobank of the Institute of Cell Therapy is the leader in
cryopreservation and manufacturing of placenta drugs in Ukraine and worldwide.
Under the auspices of the Coordination Center for the Transplantation of Organs,
Tissues and Cells of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, the Institute of Cell Therapy
on the basis of the Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy of NAMSU
Chas tested this innovative therapy for infectious and neurotrophic etiology keratites
in the framework of clinical trial.
As a result of several years of research, good engraftment of the transplanted
amniotic membrane of the human placenta was shown as well as its high elasticity
and durability, which is necessary for transplant modeling, depending on the corneal
defect. No inflammatory purulent processes were noted in the postoperative period on
any stage of the observation as well as no allergic reactions to the graft.
In 100% of patients (all 40 patients) with neurotrophic, herpetic and bacterial
keratitis, high efficacy of the transplanted placental amniotic membrane preparation,
cryoconserved in the Institute of Cell Therapy Cryobank, was shown. Significant
increase of vision in patients after transplantation of the placental amniotic membrane
was also noted.
Based on the research conducted by the scientists of the Filatov Institute of Eye
Diseases and Tissue Therapy of NAMSU, the world leader in the field of
ophthalmology, it was concluded that it is expedient to use a cryoconserved amniotic
membrane of the placenta during the surgical treatment of keratitis.
