Cord blood is successfully used in the treatment of leukemia in adults

Hematopoietic stem cell transplant is the “gold standard” in the treatment of malignant tumors of the hematopoietic system. The main sources of hematopoietic stem cells are the bone marrow and peripheral blood after the donor has taken special medicines. At the same time, the umbilical cord blood contains a huge number of stem cells, necessary for the treatment of leukemia

However, until recently, umbilical cord blood was used only for treating children, since the number of stem cells collected from one umbilical cord was not always sufficient for treating an adult patient. But scientists managed to overcome this problem by developing effective technologies for the cultivation (increase of the number) of cord blood stem cells

Recently, the Journal of Clinical Oncology reported that the rate of successful engraftment of umbilical cord blood stem cells in adults was 94%. These cells were processed according to special technology at Duke University (USA)

Professor Horwitz (Duke University (USA) also says that the new method for processing cord blood reduces the stem cells engraftment time by 11.5 days, what means that the introduced cord blood restores the patient’s immune system much earlier, preventing infections in the post-transplant period

In Ukraine, the Cryobank of the Institute of Cell Therapy pays great attention to methods of umbilical cord blood cryopreservation, because this plays crucial role for the engraftment rate and the effectiveness of treatment. Cell preparations of the Institute of Cell Therapy are the most frequently used in clinical trials on the base of the leading clinics of the country. Our Cryobank is the only biobank in Ukraine accredited by ISO 2009:2015
