Stem Cells Against Aging

The World Health Organization (WHO) notes the acceleration of population aging worldwide and predicts that by 2050 the number of people over the age of 60 will reach 2 billion. Accordingly, an increase in the rate of atherosclerosis, vascular accidents, neurodegenerative diseases and numerous economic consequences is expected. Therefore, promotion of healthy aging and prevention of age-related diseases is one of the key tasks of the modern health care system around the world.

In 2023, the international scientific journal “Frontiers in Aging” published an article entitled “Recent clinical trials with stem cells to slow or reverse normal aging processes” by Ricardo P. Garay from the National Center for Scientific Research in Paris (France).

The article states that aging is characterized by a deterioration in the potential of stem cells. The author provides data on clinical studies from national and international platforms of the USA, EU, China, Japan, and the World Health Organization, in which the “antiviral” effect of stem cells is studied. Two areas of application of mesenchymal stem cells in antiaging therapy are presented – physical weakness and skin aging. Recall that their optimal sources are the umbilical cord and placenta.

Positive results were obtained in the 2nd phase of the completed clinical trial, where allogeneic bone marrow stem cells were used, and the I/II phase of the clinical trial, in which patients were administered allogeneic umbilical cord blood stem cells. Regarding age-related skin changes, positive results have been obtained from the use of autologous (own) stem cells of adipose tissue. Another 16 clinical trials are being conducted in this direction. For the treatment of age-related changes in the skin, stem cells are injected locally, to increase “vital forces” – permanently.

It is also known that the length of telomeres of chromosomes shortens with age in cells, and the activity of such an enzyme as telomerase decreases. This justifies the application of stem cells collected at birth from umbilical cord blood, umbilical cord, placenta, in which these indicators are high.

Antiaging therapy programs developed by the Institute of Cell Therapy using stem cells of perinatal tissues (umbilical cord, placenta) and placenta extract are available in Ukraine. Their safety and effectiveness are confirmed by more than 20 years of clinical experience of the Institute of Cell Therapy.
