The cord blood bank, like any other bank, is a place of responsible storage, in this case of biological materials and drugs, obtained from them: cord blood stem cells, preparations, derived from the placenta and umbilical cord. All these biological materials are obtained at the time of birth of the child. Until the child’s age of legal majority, the “deposit” – that is, the stem cells isolated – is controlled by the parents of the baby, after the age of majority the child can use the stored biomaterial at their own discretion. The first cord blood bank appeared in the world in early 1990s. The first licensed Cryobank in Ukraine has been operating since 2003.
Cryobank and cord blood bank: the same thing?
From a technical point of view, yes, since in both cases the technology of cryopreservation of biological materials in liquid nitrogen is used. The term “cord blood bank” implies that only cells derived from this biological material are stored in it. The concept of “cryobank” is much broader: various biological materials and preparations are stored in a cryobank. The concept of “cryobank” includes the concept of “cord blood bank”. Cryostorage – as well as cryoconservation and are correct and mean one thing: stem cells of different types isolated from cord blood, placenta and umbilical cord are stored in special tanks with liquid nitrogen at a temperature of -196˚С in the Cryobank (Kiev), you can also save ovarian tissue, placenta extract, and other cells of the organism.
Cryobank: storage of stem cells for an unlimited period
Storage technology in liquid nitrogen involves several steps. You can see how all this happens in real time, as well as within the virtual tour, here.
The first stage: the collected biological material is delivered to the laboratory of the Cryobank.
The second stage: the quality of all delivered samples is checked in the laboratory.
The third stage: stem cells are isolated from the biological material that has passed quality control in the laboratory. They are distributed in small containers so that, if necessary, a small part of the cells can be extracted and the desired biopreparation can be prepared. Cells can be frozen only once without loss of viability and quality. That is why all the cells obtained are divided into “doses” that can be removed from the storage and thawed as needed.
The fourth stage: freezing of the selected cells. This process is carried out in a special tank, where the software is responsible for freezing and maintaining the temperature.
The fifth stage: frozen at the necessary temperature, the samples are placed into tanks with liquid nitrogen, in which the temperature is maintained around -196˚С. Liquid nitrogen is added to the tanks from time to time, as it tends to evaporate.
The sixth stage: all information about the cells of the customer is stored on the secure server of Cryobank. Any chance to confuse saved samples or spoil them is excluded.
Not just storage: the structure of the cord blood bank
The cord blood bank is not just a room with storage equipment. This is a well- established system in which every process of work is treated with great responsibility. Otherwise there will be no guarantee of complete safety and high quality of the samples.
- The cord blood bank is located in Kiev and has its own logistics system. The transport department is responsible for ensuring that cord blood, the umbilical cord and the placenta, after a baby is born, arrive at the Cryobank in Kiev as soon as possible, following the conditions of sterility and temperature regimen.
- Cryobank has its own laboratory, which is engaged in the isolation of different types of cells from all biological materials.
- Own PCR laboratory is mandatory to have since it checks the entire biomaterial for sterility, the presence of infections and antibodies to them.
- Cryostorage: a room where freezing of the obtained cells is carried out, as well as their storage in tanks with liquid nitrogen.
- Own database and server that protect the data of bank clients.
How to become a Cryobank client
Those who entrusted storage of cord blood to Cryobank are called differently: clients or depositors. Stored stem cells are sometimes called "deposit". Banking terminology is fully justified: anyone who chooses to preserve umbilical cord blood in a Cryobank actually makes an investment to the future of their child, storing universal cells for them, used in the treatment of at least a hundred of serious diseases.
A cryobank located in Kiev provides the collection and storage of umbilical cord blood, umbilical cord and placenta throughout Ukraine. To become a cryobank’s client, you need to sign an agreement with the bank in advance of the expected day of labor. The bank of stem cells will undertake all other processes.
